What is Touhoumon?
Have you heard of the bullet hell video game franchise Touhou Project? The one that has been on since the 1990s? The one with the wonderful music?
It has a lot of characters, with several factions of people, spirits, ghosts, youkai, and gods… “How about we substitute the pokemon in games with the Touhou characters?” someone pondered one day. and then BAM! Touhoumon was created.
Noteworthy derivatives include Touhoumon Purple, Touhoumon Another World, Touhoumon Zoku Gensokyo Scenario, and Touhou Puppet Play Enhanced, among others.
Focusing on Touhoumon Another World, this hack introduces a novel concept where a Japanese rom hacker initially developed an original game region inspired by Gensokyo, but the project was abandoned after creating only a portion of the game. However, two individuals took up the idea and carried on, creating Another World. This version combines the Gensokyo-inspired region with the world of Pokémon Fire Red, allowing players to explore both regions.
Reviews for the hack were mixed, praising its departure from conventional rom hacks by offering a new story and extended gameplay. However, it faced criticism for imbalanced gameplay mechanics, glitches affecting player experience (such as music cutouts and sprite issues), and subpar writing quality. The reception was varied, with some considering it an advancement over previous hacks while others found it lacking in certain aspects compared to its predecessors like World Link.
Description
Touhoumon Another World (Retold) is much the same as Touhou Puppet Play Enhanced (Reloaded). It is my version of Touhoumon Another World, and I have torn down quite a few things in this hack to do what I’d want it to do. It has an original story, it has a redone Kanto, it has completely rebalanced Boneka (thanks to BluShell and DarkSlayer415 from the Touhoumon Revised Discord), and it fixes a lot of contentious things from the original.
And as a note, this rom hack does not use Touhoumon 1.8 stats, types, abilities, evolutions, or anything of that nature. It is a completely overhauled Touhoumon 1.5, with mons up to Touhou 14 currently, and replacing the Dragon type with the Faith type, due to a lack of Dragons in Touhou. Once again, the credit for these stats must go to BluShell and DarkSlayer415 from the Touhoumon Revised Discord. Without them, this would not have been possible.
