Description

There are tons of hacks out there that completely change up the Pokemon experience to make something new. But what if you just wanted something that attempts to improve upon the great game that is already there? Pokemon Throwback is an attempt at doing just that. This hack incorporates new features and fixes into the 1st Gen remakes to try and create the most robust version of the original Kanto story available while remaining true to the GBA games at its core.

Features

GB Sounds

This patch adds classic music from Pokémon Red/Green/Blue/Yellow, sourced directly from the original ROM code for high accuracy. Music plays through the Game Boy Advance’s PSG sound chip (except for one track), maintaining original sound quality.

You can access the classic tracks using the new GB Sounds item found in your Key Items Pocket at game start. The game remembers your music choice, and the Gen I tracks now include custom stereo panning—though mono remains recommended.

Notes:

  • Emulator PSG sound implementation may affect audio quality, especially in mGBA where sound is harsher and less clear.
  • Track volume matches the original games to preserve correct fade outs.
  • “Jigglypuff’s Song” uses DirectSound, not PSG, and cannot be easily replicated via the standard sound engine.
  • The Game Freak logo sound in Throwback is from JP Red/Green; the version from later releases can’t be accurately reproduced.
  • Pitch bending may not be fully accurate, possibly due to hardware or emulation differences, though it still sounds satisfactory.
  • Modulation effects may be imperfect due to limited documentation, emulation quirks, and potential differences in GBA vs. Game Boy PSG support.

Here’s a concise rewrite of your text, keeping all important information:

Catch ’em All

You can obtain all Pokémon from Generations I and II in this hack. They’re thoughtfully distributed throughout the game to match official releases. Some events for single-encounter Pokémon, like starters and legendaries, have been subtly adjusted to fit the game’s style. Trade evolutions still require trading for authenticity, but you can simulate trades using Bill’s Teleporter at the Sea Cottage. No Hoenn Pokémon are included yet, though they may be added in the future.

Other changes:

  • The title screen is no longer version-specific.
  • The post-game has been streamlined:
    • Sevii Islands are now only available after beating the Elite Four.
    • The National Pokédex is given after beating the game, no matter how many Pokémon you’ve caught.
    • Non-Kanto Pokémon can be obtained at any time.

These updates streamline progression and let you use non-Kanto Pokémon during the main story. For details on wild Pokémon locations, check the Wild Locations file in the “Documents” folder.

Wardrobe

This hack restores the original outfits for the player and rival, closely matching their classic looks from earlier games. All related sprites—including in-game, battle, opening, and credits—have been updated accordingly.

Want the female player character to not have a hat on? There’s an optional Wardrobe patch by Karmageddon that allows her to go hatless, similar to her appearance in the Pokémon Adventures manga.

Extras

This patch adds various quality-of-life features and improvements inspired by later Pokémon generations, as well as new items and bug fixes:

  • Faster game saving.
  • Removal of unnecessary tutorials.
  • Infinite TM and Move Tutor use.
  • Running Shoes from the start, with the ability to run indoors.
  • Trees cut by Cut stay gone permanently.
  • Repels can be used consecutively.
  • Overworld poison effects are removed.
  • Nature-affected stats are color-coded in the Pokémon Info screen.
  • Magma Armor and Flame Body boost egg-hatching speed.
  • Correct fanfare plays when collecting items.
  • All Berries except Lansat and Starf are obtainable in-game; those two have special methods. Check Cerulean City, Berry Forest, and Resort Gorgeous for details.
  • Berries 21–26 now lower EVs and improve friendship. EVs per stat are capped at 252.
  • Numerous glitches and graphical issues have been fixed (e.g., Pokédex species, Nugget Bridge, roaming legendary IV bug).
  • Deeper Mt. Moon areas improved.
  • Wild Pokémon held items now include some from newer games.
  • Many new items are now available, including Scope Lens, Choice Band, Shell Bell, all missing flutes, various Poké Balls, and more—see “Newly-Added Items.txt” for details.
  • Your character faces trainers upon being challenged, even at Trainer Tower.
  • Rival uses unique defeat taunts taken from unused Gen I text.
  • Translation and localization fixes/reverts for elements like blacking out, Gamblers, Celadon Condominiums, and more.
  • Characters renamed to match later canon: Green to Blue and Charine to Janine.
  • The Viridian Gym Leader, Elite Four, and Champion have tougher parties matching their Gen I teams.
  • Pokémon League and certain multiplayer areas now use authentic music tracks.
  • Game Freak opening properly displays “Presents”.
  • The Pewter City Pokémon Center’s Jigglypuff now spins, as in Gen I.
  • Default text speed is now “Fast” and the engine is optimized.
  • Eggs aren’t shown as healing at Centers.
  • Rocket grunts disappear at appropriate times.
  • Always-hit moves display their accuracy as “-“.
  • No extra music delay when using the Itemfinder on hidden items.

And More!

  • Decapitalization: All in-game text is properly decapitalized, except for menu items and moments of shouting. Separate patches cover new or changed text in the hack.
  • Higher Quality Cries: This patch replaces Kanto and Johto Pokémon cries with higher-quality, uncompressed WAV files sampled at 13,379 Hz (the standard GBA rate). Note: this uses significant ROM space.
  • Custom Learnset Changes: This optional patch updates Pokémon learnsets to include all relevant level-up and Egg moves from Generations III, IV, and V. It changes game balance and is not part of the main Throwback patch. It’s designed for players seeking a fresh gameplay experience and works well combined with the Physical/Special/Status move split mod.
