Description
Explore the Fukala Region, a group of islands in the far west discovered recently by the Pokemon League. Your mission as a trainer is to put the brand-new gyms to the test. Discover the secrets of these tropical islands, but be wary—some inhabitants are hostile to the Pokemon League and may wish for its demise.
Pokemon Coastal is a Fire Red ROM hack that remains true to the Gen 3 experience. The only addition from subsequent generations is one Pokemon for a Gym Leader, which is available to the player. Aside from that, enjoy the traditional FireRed experience in a new region. Three Legendary Pokemon are also available, hidden off the main route.
This hack is difficult and may necessitate grinding at some points, particularly after the seventh Gym. However, I believe the difficulty is balanced until that point.
I (RandomAce42) am not a sprite artist, so I used established character sprites to represent new ones. For example, the Gym Leaders are based on people I know in real life, but they use sprites from other Gym Leaders or Elite Four members. Blaine’s sprite depicts a character named Azure, while Maxie’s sprite from Emerald is used for Gym Leader #8, who is based on a friend. Remember that these characters differ from the originals, whose sprites are used.
Plot
Welcome to the Fukala region! Fukala is located far to the west. It consists of numerous sparse islands of varying sizes. Fukala’s people do not have a Pokemon League. Professor Oak has been tasked with assisting in the construction of one.
You’re Professor Oak’s assistant. His right-hand man. You’ve come with him to Fukala to help him set up and test the League. You will assist the professor with various research tasks as well.
This adventure will be difficult. Although Fukala lacks an official competitive scene, the challenge of surviving the harsh islands has hardened both the people and their Pokemon.
Are you ready?

Changelog
v1.6
Dev Comments:
- Patch 1.6 is just a small patch that fixes a potential softlock in the 6th Gym and allows you to re-enter the Celebi event if you fly out of it for whatever reason.
- The documentation for this patch will not be updated, so refer to the 1.5 docs. I have also slightly lowered the level curve towards the end of the game.
- Currently, I am relatively happy with the state that Pokemon Coastal Version is in. So, unless other major bugs or soft locks are brought to my attention, I will be fully focusing on my next project. I’ve started to learn Decomp Hacking using the Pokeemerald Expansion. After that Project, I may remake Coastal Version as Coastal Redux, mainly focusing on overhauling the story, but also fixing the abhorrent level curve and adding QOL features.
Fixes:
- Fixed a softlock in Gym Six + minor changes
- The time stone reappears in its original spot so you may re-encounter Celebi if you white out or leave the event for any reason before finishing it.
- Slightly lowered the level curve towards the end of the game
v1.5
Side Note: When you load your save after defeating the Elite Four, you will appear in New Shore Town. Professor Oak will approach you and instruct you to go to Nanowatt City. This marks the beginning of a potential Post-Game, which is incomplete as of this patch. You can access the lab, but nothing further will happen. Stay tuned for the V2 patch where this content will be completed.
Updates:
- Route 3 Name Fixed: Previously mislabeled as Sea Route 1.
- Mountain Softlock Fixed: Resolved a softlock issue on the mountain on the first island.
- Route 1 Changes: Major updates, including increased Pokémon variety.
- Sage Prize Clarity: Added text to the Sages to reduce confusion about where the prize went.
- Venopolis Pokémon Center Dialogue: Clarified that the Wise Man Sage and the Urban Sage are separate characters.
- Daycare Added: A new daycare has been added to Rocky Heights. (Untested—please save before using and report any issues.)
- Trade Evolutions: Trade evolutions can now be performed using the Link Cable item, available for purchase in the Seafoam Town Pokémon League Store.
v1.4
- Finished Official Documentation
- Adjustments to Route 1
- Detail added to the Sea Route east of Wave Break Town
- Fixed trainer in Dripstone Cave who was set to a story event team(meaning they had a lvl 75 Kyogre).
- Fixed the Trainer in Victory Road who had a full team of Kakuna
- Fixed Dialogue Errors, Typos, and Formatting
- Moved the Move Brothers into Rocky Heights from Route 5
- Adjusted Wild Pokémon in several areas to increase variety and standardize levels.
- Changed some Route Names to keep consistency

The VS seeker doesn’t work 🙁
pretty good romhack. difficulty is good, the items you pick up on the ground are almost always useful to you in someway. rarely any bad mons you find in wild (you can get a pichu, feebas, and trapinch relatively early in the game). very neat story, not overly ambitious, dev definitely knows his limits. hope he makes more romhacks in the future
Hello admin! This doesnt work. I think you need to parch it with a different Fire Red ROM than usual. Please fix! Look into the Reddit thread, he says that he couldnt explain in the Pokewhatever website.
i’ve patched it to the correct rom, it’s fire red usa, europe rev 1 right? and I just checked loading the game on mgba and it works fine
Thank you so much!
Can I get Crobat in this game?
The VS Seeker does not work
v1.4 has a game-breaking bug on Route 1 where going up the mountain will get you stuck there because the route becomes glitched if you try to leave the way you came. This also happens to be one of those hacks using a FireRed rom on which most cheat codes won’t work so trying to use a wallhack to get out doesn’t help.
Protip for the developer: add a ledge you can jump down somewhere so that way if a map breaks one way you can still get out another way…or give the player an item that mimics Teleport so that way you can just warp to the nearest town if you get softlocked. It’s not a proper fix, but it could be a temporary solution until the maps are made more stable.
