Quick Summary

If you’re after a classic Pokémon journey with modern quality-of-life features, mature themes (handled thoughtfully, not edgily), and a few clever twists, this is for you.

What this isn’t: a hardcore difficulty hack, a fakemon-filled adventure, or the next big fan game like Unbound. It’s not tailored for challenge runners or content creators.

What it is: a love letter to fans who were 10 when they first saved Professor Birch—and want to feel that joy all over again. Think Pokémon Gaia, but with a slightly older heart.

Description

Explore the brand-new region of Cormoria with your trusted companions on an exciting journey through icy peaks, volcanic craters, marshy swamps, city sewers, and more. Your mission: find the missing Professor Tenebris and uncover the secrets of the mysterious Dreamstones she discovered. What makes these stones so powerful—and why is Team Somber so desperate to get their hands on them? It’s up to you to stop their dark ambitions before it’s too late.

Features

  • A brand-new region and a brand-new storyline!
  • Brand-new innovations to the core gameplay loop! (see below for details)
  • Stories, sidequests, and characters that showcase adult ideas and scenarios while retaining the childlike whimsy of the Pokémon universe!
  • A curated Pokédex of ~300 Pokémon across all the generations, chosen with love and care to create balance, immersion, and a surprise around every corner!
  • Grind removal mechanics: early exp all, mints, bottle caps, and a brand-new EV editor!
  • Updated visuals: beautifully recolored tilesets, fancy new menu screens, minimalist textboxes!
  • Pokémon followers! Up to 5 characters to choose from! No need to learn HMs to use them! Faster battles! Unique Pokémon encounters! An inbuilt quest system! Tons of overworld Pokémon interactions! Mega evolutions! And this, and that, and so much more!

Roadmap

  • The game is currently about 70% complete.
  • An open beta was released on April 12th, covering content up to the fourth gym. This marks the first third of the game, with an estimated playtime of around 8 hours.
  • The full release is expected in the first week of May.

Note

The open beta has concluded (but you can still download and play it if you want to try it). As mentioned above. The full release is expected to come out in the first week of May.

Gameplay Loop Changes

This section offers insight into some of the new core gameplay mechanics designed to enhance player immersion and strategic depth in Pokemon Dreamstone Mysteries.

  • Undertake a challenging journey: Routes are structured as one-way paths—once you move forward, you can’t backtrack to the Pokémon Center. This removes the traditional “run back and heal” pattern, encouraging players to prepare for each stretch like a real journey. To keep it fair, each route includes a one-time Nurse Joy and healing items are made more affordable.
  • Truly grow with your team: Instead of instant stat customization or endless grinding, this game focuses on steady progression. You’ll build your team gradually—one mint, one vitamin at a time. This slower growth encourages attachment and a sense of partnership with your Pokémon, rather than treating them as mere bundles of stats.
  • Meaningful choice-based gameplay: Choices in this game are subtle but impactful. Instead of binary moral decisions, you’ll face frequent, nuanced trade-offs: Adrenaline Orb or Shell Bell? Normal Gem or Silk Scarf? Feebas or a Mystery Egg? These small decisions accumulate, shaping a playthrough that feels personal and distinct—crafted by the player, often without even realizing it.

Author Note

I love Pokémon, and I’m grateful we have the tools and community to ROM hack it. This project exists thanks to the many incredible open-source contributions from talented developers in the scene. Once version 1.0 is released, I’ll be open-sourcing all of my work for others to use and build upon.

If anything in the game catches your eye or inspires you, feel free to reach out—or just wait for the full release. In the meantime, I’m happy to answer questions on Reddit or in the Pokémon Dreamstone Mysteries Discord server.

Thanks to everyone who’s taken the time to read, support, or play. I hope you enjoy the beta and the full game when it’s ready.

Things to know about the Open Beta

Notes

  1. Please play as if you’re just doing a regular playthrough! Try to enjoy the game and let me know what things organically pop up, both good and bad stuff.
  2. Your starters have had their evolution methods and levels changed. Every other Pokemon is unchanged (everything is gen 9 learnsets, gen 9 stats, etc.)
  3. Since this is still a beta, there may be some jank. Please bear with me! Don’t forget to save frequently.

Not functional for the beta

  1. The Pokedex is not functional
  2. The Town Map is not fully functional
  3. Some grass animations are miscolored
